Practical Interpersonal Skills

(one day workshop)

What makes some people especially effective in interacting with others? How are they able to both influence and get along well with almost everyone? It’s not a matter of luck. It’s about interpersonal skills and techniques… and patterns they have developed over time.

This is the 101 of it – the class you never had in school!

This day is based on two assumptions. First, that we all can improve our ability to interact and influence. Second, that specific skills, strategies and word choices are involved in being effective with others.

Key Topics

  • increasing self-insights (patterns, strengths, things needing change)
  • words to use… words to avoid
  • avoiding/managing conflicts
  • verbal dos and don’ts
  • non-verbals (both reading others better and managing what you send)
  • new assertive techniques
  • giving and getting useful feedback
  • importance of rehearsing
  • the PAUSE-breath-choose technique

How We’ll Proceed

A fast-paced, interactive class using a self-analysis questionnaire, skill practice in a safe environment, brief lectures, follow-up emails, and individuals making their own action plans and creating their own tool kits. This day is not about adding to your mental library, but rather focusing on increasing your behavioral options.

Expected Outcome

  • being more grounded in how to handle yourself in a variety of situations
  • leaving with a game plan for working on specific skills and interacting with specific people
  • leaving with a tool kit you have assembled to help you achieve those changes you visualize and are committed to
